December Breckenridge-Frisco Community Insider

Welcome to the December Breckenridge-Frisco Community Insider! I hope that everyone was able to enjoy Thanksgiving with their families and those closest to them. December in Colorado is a special time of year. And with the holidays upon us, we have many local events to look forward to this month. These are a few that I hope to partake in; what are your favorite holiday traditions or events in the Breckenridge-Frisco area?

58th annual Ullr Fest

If you’re in an especially festive mood this weekend you should absolutely check out the 58th annual Ullr Fest!

Pronounced OOOL-er, this signature Breckenridge event celebrates the Norse god of snow, so grab your Viking hats and join us for this legendary party! Taking place December 9-12 locals and visitors of all ages will find the event filled with fun for the whole family.

And don’t forget to find the Official Ullr and take a selfie. He’ll be hard to miss because he’s decked out in full Ullr attire! Here are a few of the other highlights you won’t want to miss. (Photo Credit: Louie Traub, Summit Daily News).

Ullr Parade Down Main Street

This is a great opportunity to show off your best Viking costumes and your support for our local community!

Crowning of the Ullr King and Queen

To kick off the festival this year, and continue 58 years of tradition, there will be the crowning of the Ullr King and Queen. The Ullr Fest royalty are chosen for their unique contributions to our community and (of course) for their love of snow! Find out who will be crowned on Thursday at 3:30.

World’s Longest ShotSki®

After meeting the King and Queen, why not beat a world record? You can sign up to join the Breckenridge Distillery and Breckenridge Mountain Rotary in their attempt to continue their reign for the unofficial world record for the longest shotski®. They need 1,333 people to beat the 2019 world record, so grab your friends and take your place in history! You can sign up here, but they’re expecting to sell out so make sure you register as soon as possible!. The event starts at 4:00pm. Make sure you show up early to get lined up. All proceeds benefit the Breckenridge Mountain Rotary.

Movie Screening: “The Art of Flight”

Cap off the weekend by checking out the new Eclipse Theater. They will be offering a free public viewing of The Art of Flight – one of the best snowboard movies ever made. With cutting-edge cinematography, amazing landscapes, and some of the best freestyle snowboarding ever captured on film, if you haven’t seen it yet this is a great opportunity to learn more about one of our area’s many pastimes.

This free event is open to all ages and will be taking place Sunday at 11:30.

The film stars Mark Landvik, Pat Moore, John Jackson, and a few other faces that many of you are likely to recognize.

No Ullr Bonfire This Year

Unfortunately, one of the signature events at Ullr Fest will not be taking place this year. The 2021 Ullr Bonfire has been postponed for public safety concerns as there is not a suitable place to hold the event. Considering things like crowd management and potential property damage local officials are erring on the side of caution. Let’s hope that we see it return next year and in the meantime – keep praying for more snow!
